Harry Bellafonte was hot to me when I was 10, and he was a great activist. Only ever saw him on Ed Sullivan or Andy Williams. I saw Dame Edna live in SF once. She was hysterically funny just commenting on life, then she was sweet and tender, especially when she spoke about her son. I loved the way she could softly poke fun at the world. Thanks for remembering them both today.

I loved it! I laughed aloud at the last line. Ogod, Harry Belafonte was one of the sexiest men on Earth.

A beautiful piece of writing, Leah! Harry Belafonte was the sexiest man alive for me—age 12, when my mother had just divorced my father. “Belafonte” was the first record I bought after the divorce from the man who allowed no pop or jazz or folk in our home. My mother’s first record purchase was the Ink Spots! These records sound like freedom, to this day!

Oh for me, too. He represented so much, including sexiness, respect and (wow does this sound naive) hope for racial equality. Jacob tweeted that he had inherited all my sister’s (our family’s) LPs. Xxx

Funny! But I don’t think Greenberg’s a hypocrite! He just has a neutered guy’s quite understandable jealousy. Nakedness is not a playing-field leveler.

(You can tell my mind got waylaid before Harry Belafonte and Dame Edna even crossed the Rainbow Bridge.)

I was disappointed to learn that Barry Humphries, despite his flamboyant use of drag, was actually very non-supportive of LGBTQ issues. Chalk it up to Australia, I suppose.

" Two pals at either end of a leash." Wow. What a great -- and absolutely Garchikian -- image. The kind that used to drive me crazy with writer's envy at the Chron. Brava, Leah!

What a pleasure to read a witty riff on arrival in heaven, where fashion means most! Seriously, Leah this is the walk with a dog I’ve been waiting for! Brilliant.
